SETTING

Valoran Institute takes place in an alternate universe version of Runeterra. Many of the same conventions within older League of Legends lore hold true: Demacia and Noxus still hate each other, Yordles still exist, and the Institute of War continues to exist. However, while old lore still stands, it has been given a modern twist, the world of Runeterra brought into modern day.

PLACES
BILGEWATER UNION, located off the southeast coast of Valoran, has grown a lot since its discovery 150 years ago. Instead of brushing off the reputation of being a pirate's haven, they have instead embraced it, becoming something of a tourist hotspot.

DEMACIA continues to serve as the paragon of justice around Valoran, but instead of a military state, Demacia functions similarly to the world police. Very patriotic, they unabashedly live by the code that might makes right, and that they are always right.

FRELJORD is a land of perpetual ice and snow, and in many ways has not changed at all. Various political families vie for command over this frozen tundra, and it is said that a terrible ice witch and the immortal Iceborn call this place home, but they are only legends.

IONIA is an extremely spiritual nation, and while not as advanced as Piltover or Demacia, they have made leaps and bounds in recent years. Merging picturesque landscapes with cities built around their many shrines, they have managed to stay relatively neutral.

NOXUS is a country that rewards knowledge and power, but glorifies the shrewd and conniving--as long as they can get away with it. Possessing one of largest military forces in Valoran, they are constantly at odds with Demacia, and many fear for when tensions ignite.

SHURIMA remains a land of harsh sands and even harsher citizens. These ruins are quite popular among archaeologists and treasure seekers. With a history rife with injustice, it is said that the blood of the Ascended still courses in the veins of those that call Shurima home.

BANDLE CITY had humble beginnings as a small hamlet for Yordles, but has since become a tourist spot for those looking for the small town experience. Their craftsmanship and manufacturing are all first class, so if it says "Made in Bandle City," you know it's good!

PILTOVER is a technical wonderland, leading Valoran in the fields of science and green energy. Much of their buildings have been retrofitted to be ecologically sound, and if there is a technological breakthrough, you better believe it came from Piltover.

ZAUN was once a bustling metropolis, but due to astronomically high pollution levels, only the most dedicated proudly call this place home. The smog is toxic, and over time the physiology of Zaun's citizens has changed to withstand these dangerous conditions. Change is good.

MOUNT TARGON is home to a number of small towns, many of which with more barbaric, tribal histories, particularly that of the Solari and the Rakkor. The people here take great pride in their rich heritage, and as warriors and commanders they are highly respected and revered.

THE SHADOW ISLES are whispered about late at night. Some say that the lands are haunted by the spirits of the dead. Others that they are cursed, and that whoever makes the Shadow Isles their home are truly the damned. Few know they truth—and they won't tell.

THE VOID is a place that few believe exists. Little is known about The Void, but it would seem that the abominations that call this slice of heavenly hell home are highly intelligent, and quite curious about the fleshy creatures that call Runeterra home.

VALORAN INSTITUTE
Located on 750 acres of space between Demacia and Noxus in Valoran, Valoran Institute brings together citizens from the various countries and city-states around the continent. Since its inception nearly 250 years ago with Valoran University (then Valoran College), Valoran Institute (known affectionately as VI) has stood as a beacon of excellence, producing great heroes, scholars, politicians, and everything in between.

Criteria for what makes a great VI student changes, and more often than not students are "chosen" due to their potential and various exploits, rather than selected through application. Students live on campus, in various dorms located around the institute's large campus; these include both gender-segregated and co-ed dormitories. With names such as MORELLO, GUINSOO, and PHREAK (a dorm which is, admittedly, never taken seriously), they are separated based upon the student's enrollment status--whether they attend Valoran Preparatory School, Valoran Academy or Valoran University.

VALORAN PREPARATORY SCHOOL
“A place to learn; a chance to grow.”
Girls' Uniforms | Boys' Uniforms
Serving children ages 4 through 14, Valoran Preparatory School, or VPrep, acts as a foundation for higher education. Teaching a wide variety of subjects, students are given a well-rounded education, as well as opportunities to interact with Academy and University students through various school spirit and other related events. VPrep also offers a wide variety of sports teams, as well as a number of clubs and extra curriculars to given their students an enriching education experience.

VALORAN ACADEMY
“A world divided against itself will not remain.”
Girls' and Boys' Uniforms
Valoran Academy is the paragon of education, its students embodying such virtues as knowledge, discipline and courageousness. While it is not required, many VCad students previously attended VPrep, and many of the same lessons are extrapolated upon. Boasting a wide variety of classes, as well as a robust collection of extra curricular activities and sports teams, Valoran Academy has a reputation for being the cream of the crop not only in academics but on the field as well.

VALORAN UNIVERSITY
“A common bond for all.”
Valoran University was founded with the intent that its students would come together despite previous political alliances. Established nearly 250 years ago, VU was the first educational institute of its kind, bringing together students from all countries an d city-states around Valoran. Acceptance is highly competitive, and few are admitted each year. Boasting programs from nearly every field imaginable, it is truly an honor to attend this illustrious school.

HOW THIS COMM WORKS

POSTS
Players are encouraged to post on their own, but Valoran Institute will be functioning similarly to a musebox. Every month, a series of prompts will appear that characters are able (but not required) to respond to/post about. Players are welcome to create their own threads in the monthly post, or post up their own (for example, if a teacher wants to post something about a class they're teaching; or if someone playing a villain type wants to mess around; things like that). The monthly posts will be found in the Calendar post, so if you missed out on something and really want to play it out, you can.

Players are encouraged to join the community for posting purposes, but are not required to do so.

There are no time limits on tagging posts, so if you find something interesting that you want to play out from a few months back, feel free to do that!

Around the 15th of every month, the mods will be posting up a Mini Event log. This will involve some kind of larger-scale thing (such as a school dance, exams, etc.) that players may make a top level comment to, should they wish to get involved.

CLAIMS
To keep a bit of internal consistency, only one version of a character may be played at any given time. You can find a list of characters here. Obviously, since we are not a game, activity is not required, but we do ask that, if you are no longer interested in this PSL/Musebox, that you comment on the Yearbook post so that we can take you off the list. Again, this is by honor system, but please be considerate of those who might want to play.

We ask that there is some way to contact you either placed in your character journal, or that you link to another method (Plurk, a personal DW, etc.) on your yearbook entry. Posting your AU ideas on your journal are not required.

TIMETABLE
PSLs have a beginning and an end, and so does Valoran Institute. Currently, this PSL will take place over one school year, starting from September and ending in May in-game time. These are somewhat nebulous timeframes, as, again, players are welcome and encouraged to go back to previous months if there is something that they want to play out. However, no new posts will be made after JANUARY 2016, unless stated otherwise.

DISPUTES
They happen, and it really sucks. However, we are confident that players here can resolve issues that may arise. However, if something happens that you feel cannot be resolved, or may become a pressing issue in the future, please send a message to the mod journal here ( [personal profile] poropride ) and we will try to help you as best we can.

SEPTEMBER

( Soundtrack for the month ) ( Top-level view ) ( Latest Page )

WEATHER
Expect warmer than normal temperatures through mid September, with cooler weather settling in around the later half, especially at night. The trees around Valoran Institute will start to turn colors around this time as well, ushering in a crisp, albeit somewhat dry, end of the month.

ONGOING THROUGH SEPTEMBER
THING! describe this thing a little bit in detail and who it affects

MINI EVENT!
TOLO DANCE MONSTER MASH! Institute is hosting their annual Tolo Dance. What's a Tolo dance, you ask? The girls ask the boys! They can say no, of course, but would you really want to be caught dead without a date? Of course not! The weather is supposed to be a bit chilly that evening, so you better cuddle in close. We also hear there's a chance of Voidling showers, so come prepared!
(This log will be live on May 16th)
